What it is
Academic renewal (sometimes "fresh start" or "forgiveness") lets a student who left Porter with a poor record, stayed away for a substantial period, and returned to demonstrate they can do the work petition to have a block of old low grades excluded from the GPA calculation. The courses stay on the transcript, clearly marked as renewed; they just stop dragging the GPA.
Typical eligibility
A separation from Porter of a minimum length (commonly two to five years), readmission, and then a period of solid work back at Porter (for example, a set number of credits at a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA) *before* the renewal is granted. What it does

It does not restore financial-aid history (satisfactory academic progress looks at all attempts).
How to pursue it
Talk to the Registrar and an academic adviser or success coach after you have been readmitted and have a term or two of good work. They will tell you whether you meet the separation and performance conditions, which terms would be eligible, and what the petition requires. The dean's office of your college usually decides.
Weigh it honestly
For someone finishing a Porter degree, renewal can be the difference between graduating and not. For someone headed to a graduate or professional program that recalculates everything, the benefit is smaller. Get the specific advice for your goal before you petition, since it is a one-time action.
