The building

The Forge Recreation Center holds a strength-and-cardio floor with a full rack of platforms and machines, a six-court hardwood gym, a 35-foot climbing wall and bouldering cave, a lap-and-leisure pool with a hot tub, a suspended three-lane indoor track, multipurpose studios for group fitness and martial arts, racquetball and squash courts, a functional-training turf zone, locker rooms with day-use lockers and towel service, and a smoothie bar. A smaller satellite fitness room on North Campus covers the basics for residents who do not want the walk.

Entry is with your Campus Card and included in your fees — there is no separate membership for enrolled students. Spouses, partners, and Porter Falls community members can buy memberships; guests come in with a student sponsor for a small day rate.

Programs

Beyond drop-in use: 25+ group-fitness classes a week (spin, yoga, strength, aqua, dance) free with your card; personal training and small-group training with certified student and professional trainers for a fee; a swim school and lessons; instructional clinics in lifting, climbing, and swimming for people who want to start but do not know how; and Outdoor Adventures, which runs weekend trips (paddling, backpacking, ski, caving) and rents tents, kayaks, snowshoes, and packs cheaply from a gear room.

Intramural leagues and student-run sport clubs are large enough to have their own pages, and the center also does CPR/first-aid certification and hires 200+ students a year across the desk, floor, aquatics, and program staff.

Hours and busy times

During the semester the center runs roughly 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 6 a.m.–9 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.–9 p.m. weekends, with reduced hours over breaks and summer posted on the PorterRec site and the front doors. Live headcounts for the weight floor and cardio deck are on the site and the app.

The floor is busiest 4–7 p.m. on weekdays and the first three weeks of January; mornings, midday, and after 8 p.m. are consistently open. Pool and court time can be reserved in the app.

Starting from zero

If a gym feels like a place you are not supposed to be, the center is built to counter that: a free orientation appointment walks you through every space and how to use the equipment, the instructional clinics assume no experience, women's-hours and quieter blocks are scheduled on the weight floor, and the North Campus room is a lower-key place to build a habit first. Adaptive equipment and one-on-one support for students with disabilities are arranged through the center with the accessibility office.
