The applied experience requirement

Every Porter major requires supervised real-world work before you graduate. Here is what counts and how it is structured.

Home / The applied experience requirement

Why it is required

Porter guarantees that every graduate has done supervised work in their field before the degree is conferred. It is what stands behind the career outcomes numbers and what employers expect from a Porter graduate. The form varies by college; the requirement does not.

Co-op and internship programs

In engineering, computing, business, manufacturing, and design, the applied experience is usually a co-op (often a full semester, full-time, paid) or an internship (typically a summer). You register for a zero- or one-credit course, set written learning objectives with a faculty coordinator, and your supervisor completes an evaluation.

Clinical and practicum placements

Nursing, dietetics, rehabilitation services, counseling, and the education programs meet the requirement through clinical rotations, supervised practica, and student teaching. These are scheduled by the program, tied to licensure or accreditation standards, and often span multiple terms.

Client-sponsored capstones

For some programs the requirement is met by the two-semester senior capstone working for an outside sponsor on a scoped problem. Applied social science, technical communication, and several design tracks build the field experience into project studios.

Planning for it

Start early: the internship search for a summer role begins the previous fall, co-op placements are often arranged a term ahead, and clinical sequences have hard prerequisites. Talk to your program's coordinator and a career coach by the end of your second year so it fits without adding a semester.

For credit and on the transcript

File the learning agreement before the experience starts — retroactive credit is generally not available. The experience appears on your transcript, and the reflection or portfolio piece it produces is something you show employers.

If a placement falls through

Placements collapse — a company freezes hiring, a clinical site loses capacity. Programs keep alternates and can often substitute a faculty research project, a scoped community project, or a qualifying campus role with real responsibility. Tell your coordinator the week it happens, not the week the requirement is due.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
