Budgeting on financial aid

Making a refund last the whole term, and planning for the months aid doesn't cover.

Home / Budgeting on financial aid

The common mistake

Treating the refund as a windfall in week two and being short by week ten. Move it to a separate account, set a weekly transfer to checking, and pay the big fixed costs (rent, a bus pass, books) first.

Getting help

Financial wellness coaching will build the plan with you, for free, no judgment. If you're short despite planning — a car repair, a medical bill, a rent spike — the student emergency fund and a same-week appointment with financial aid come before a payday loan or a maxed card.

In and around Porter Falls

The Porter Student Help Desk in Founders Union 118 is the single place to start when it is not obvious which office owns a question.

The practical details

The refund: What's left after aid pays tuition, fees, and campus housing — it arrives a week or two into the term and is meant to cover books, supplies, and living costs until the next disbursement. Make a plan: Divide the refund by the number of weeks until the next one; that's your weekly ceiling. The gaps: Summer, winter break, and the start of a term before the refund lands — budget or earn for those separately. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Porter Student Help Desk (Founders Union, Room 118). Call (715) 555–0120 or email help@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
