Direct versus indirect
Your bill shows direct costs. The cost of attendance adds research-based estimates for the things you'll pay elsewhere — a laptop, groceries if you're off the meal plan, gas, a bus pass — because aid is allowed to help with those too. A lower-spending student can end a term with aid left over as a refund.
Adjustments
If you have a documented expense the standard budget doesn't cover — a disability-related cost, dependent-care while in class, a required professional licensing exam, higher commuting costs — the financial aid office can raise your cost of attendance so more aid can be applied.

Direct costs: Tuition, fees, and (if you live on campus) housing and a meal plan — billed to your account. Indirect costs: Estimated books, transportation, and personal expenses — not billed, but part of your aid budget. Aid can't exceed: Your total cost of attendance from all sources combined. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.
