Counseling services

Confidential mental-health support, consultation and crisis response for enrolled students.

Home / Counseling services

Getting started

Call (715) 555–0237 or stop by the Health & Counseling Center to schedule a first appointment (a brief intake where you and a counselor figure out what would help). Services are prepaid through student fees — there is no per-session charge for the counseling center's own care. In-person and telehealth appointments are both available; telehealth requires you to be physically in Wesconsin at the time.

The center uses a short-term model: most students are seen for a focused set of individual sessions aimed at a specific concern. When someone needs weekly long-term therapy, specialized treatment, or a level of care the center cannot provide, a case manager helps with a referral to a Porter Falls or telehealth provider and with the insurance side of that.

Same-day and crisis support

A block of same-day urgent slots is held each weekday for students in distress — you do not need an existing appointment. "Let's Talk" offers informal, drop-in consultations at locations around campus (including some identity centers) for students who want to talk something through without starting formal counseling. After hours, the 24-hour Student Support Line at (715) 555–0117 is answered by licensed counselors. For immediate danger to yourself or someone else, call 911 or go to the emergency department; campus safety can transport.

Groups, workshops, and self-help

Group counseling is often the best fit for relationships, anxiety, grief, identity, and social connection — and there is usually a shorter wait than for individual sessions. Recurring workshops cover stress and test anxiety, sleep, perfectionism, and coping skills. The center also offers a self-guided online program and free access to a meditation app for enrolled students, plus screening days each term where you can check in anonymously and talk to a counselor about the results.

Confidentiality

What you share is protected by law and is not part of your academic record. Counseling staff do not tell parents, instructors, coaches, or the university about your care, with narrow exceptions: an imminent risk of serious harm to you or another person, certain reports of abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. If you want a counselor to coordinate with an instructor about an accommodation or an absence, that happens only with your written release.
