English language support

For multilingual students — the classes, the tutoring, and the conversation practice that are all free.

You are not behind

Speaking more than one language is an asset, and needing support with academic English in a second language is expected, not a deficiency. Plenty of strong students use these resources for a term or two while the academic register clicks.

Support courses

Some multilingual students take a designated academic-English course alongside their regular load — focused on the reading, writing, and presentation demands of college coursework rather than grammar drills. It may satisfy or pair with the first-year writing requirement; an adviser sorts out how it fits your plan.

The Writing Center for multilingual writers

Writing Center consultants are trained to work with multilingual writers on the things that matter most — organization, clarity, argument, and the conventions of writing in your field — not to "fix" every article and preposition. Come at any stage of a paper. Standing weekly appointments help more than one visit before a deadline.

Conversation practice

Language conversation tables and one-on-one conversation partners pair you with other students for low-stakes speaking practice — casual, no grade, and a good way to meet people. It is the fastest way to get comfortable participating out loud in class.

Pronunciation and presentations

The Speaking Center helps with structuring a talk and handling questions, and some programs offer targeted pronunciation and presentation coaching for multilingual students preparing for a capstone presentation, a conference talk, or interviews.

Talk to your instructors

Most instructors are glad to know a strong idea is arriving through a second language and will focus feedback on the thinking. If a timed writing task or a fast-paced discussion is a specific barrier, that is worth a conversation — sometimes an accommodation applies, and always an instructor can point you to the right support.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
