Porter esports

The varsity program, the club and intramural tiers, the arena, and the production and analytics roles behind the teams.

Three tiers, not one

Esports at Porter runs at three levels so it is not all-or-nothing. Varsity: rostered, coached teams in Rocket League, VALORANT, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that compete in collegiate conferences, with tryouts each September and a scholarship pool for top players. Club: student-run competitive and semi-competitive teams in those titles plus others (fighting games, Rainbow Six, sim racing, Teamfight Tactics), lower commitment, still traveling to the occasional LAN. Intramural: casual in-house leagues and one-night tournaments open to anyone, run through the rec department. You can move up a tier as you improve or just stay where the fun is.

The arena and open play

The Founders esports arena has 48 high-spec PC stations, console setups, a streaming stage, and a coaching room. Outside reserved practice and match blocks it is open to all students for drop-in play — reserve a station in the rec app or walk in when it is quiet. It is also a straightforward social space: people bring a group, grab adjacent seats, and play. Membership is included in your fees; no separate esports fee.

The jobs around the teams

A varsity match needs more people off the server than on it, and those roles are open to students in any major: shoutcasting and hosting, camera and switching, graphics and overlay design, stream management, social media and content, photography, statistics and match analysis, roster and travel operations, and event production for the tournaments Porter hosts. Several are paid or carry a stipend, and game design, computer science, marketing, and video-production courses use the program as a live client. For a lot of students this is the real point of entry — you build a broadcast reel or an analytics portfolio, not just a rank.
