About the event
The Porter Falls Community Band started in 1948 as the municipal band and has rehearsed on campus since 1979. About a third of its members are Porter students, faculty or staff. The rest come from Porter Falls, Cedar Bluff and farther out, including one trombonist who drives 50 minutes each way from Lake City. Marjorie Lindahl conducts. She directed bands in the Porter Falls Area School District for 34 years and taught about half of the current band to count.
The holiday concert is the band’s biggest free show. It ends with a sing-along. The words are printed in the program, and Lindahl will turn around and conduct the audience whether or not it is ready.

Location and access
Heritage Auditorium is in the east wing of the Applied Arts Building. It is step-free from the east entrance and has wheelchair seating, assistive listening and a hearing loop. Parking is free on Sundays, and the Applied Arts lot is closest. See visitor parking. If the university closes for weather, the concert is cancelled. Check weather closures.
Admission
Free, with no tickets. Seating is general admission in a 900-seat hall, so there is room. Non-perishable food and toiletries go to the campus food pantry, which stocks up before winter break for students who stay in town.
Contact and related events
The concert falls on the study weekend before finals, so students are welcome to take a 75-minute break from the library, which is open 24 hours from noon that day. The band’s winter concert, “Music from the Mill Town,” is March 7, 2027. Adults who play can join any Tuesday rehearsal. More events for the town are on For the community.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. The Porter Falls Community Band, its conductor, its trombonist and this concert are invented; there is no sing-along to join, though the food pantry idea works anywhere.
