Laboratory access and badging

How students earn after-hours access to specialized spaces without turning safety into paperwork theater.

Home / Laboratory access and badging

Access follows training

Enrollment in a course may bring supervised lab time, but independent or after-hours access requires the training for that space and its equipment. Complete the online orientation, demonstrate the relevant procedures in person, and acknowledge the operating rules before access is added to the campus card.

Badges are specific

A general shop badge does not authorize the laser cutter, welding bay, chemical hood, or industrial robot. Each higher-risk process has its own practical check. The badge records authorization, not expertise: students still stop and ask when a setup falls outside what they were trained to do.

What can suspend access

Bypassing guards, working alone when a buddy is required, admitting an unbadged person, failing to report damage, or using a space while impaired can suspend access immediately. Restoration normally requires a review with the lab manager and retraining.

Plan for projects and guests

Reserve scarce equipment, confirm material approval, and request unusual access before deadline week. Visitors and project sponsors stay with an authorized host and complete required briefings. Adapted tools and accessibility-related alternatives are arranged with the lab manager and accessibility office.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, service, phone number, policy, and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
