Diagnosis and basic repair for student, staff, and university devices at the Technology Help Desk.

What's free and what isn't

Diagnosis, virus removal, driver and OS fixes, and setup help are free for enrolled students. Parts — a battery, a screen, a keyboard — are billed at cost, with a quote before any work. Out-of-warranty repairs on brands the campus store doesn't carry get a referral list instead.

Before you drop it off

Back up anything irreplaceable if the machine still boots; the Help Desk can do it for you if not. Bring your charger and, for warranty work, proof of purchase. Most software repairs turn around in one to two business days.

In and around Porter Falls

The Technology Help Desk is on the first floor of the Jarvis Technology Center. One student identity signs into MyPorter, the learning environment, campus Wi-Fi, printing and the library.

The practical details

Handles: Software problems, malware cleanup, OS reinstalls, battery and screen quotes, data backup before a wipe. Warranty work: An authorized service point for the two laptop brands sold in the campus store — in-warranty repairs done on site. Loaner: A loaner laptop while yours is in the shop, subject to availability. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Technology Help Desk (Jarvis Technology Center, Room 105). Call (715) 555–0120 or email helpdesk@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
