Living in a residence hall

Roommates, your RA, quiet hours, what to bring, and how to make a shared floor feel like home.

Home / Living in a residence hall

The roommate conversation

In the first week, fill out the roommate agreement together and actually talk it through: sleep and wake times, guests, borrowing, sharing food, how you will handle it when something bugs you. Most roommate conflict is small stuff that was never said out loud until it was a big deal.

What an RA is for

Your resident assistant is a trained student who lives on the floor, runs programs, and is the first person to go to when a roommate situation is not resolving, when you are locked out, when someone on the floor seems to be struggling, or when you just do not know who to ask. They are a resource before they are an enforcer.

Quiet hours and courtesy hours

Quiet hours (typically 10 or 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., extended during finals) mean sound should not leave your room. Courtesy hours are all the time: if someone asks you to turn it down, you turn it down. This is the single rule that most determines whether a floor is livable.

What to bring — and not

Bring: bedding for the bed size in your hall, a shower caddy and flip-flops, a surge protector, a fan, layers for a Wesconsin winter, and a small toolkit. Skip: candles, halogen lamps, most space heaters, extension cords run under rugs, and anything on the prohibited list — the housing site has it, and RAs do check during safety walks.

Getting connected

Go to the first few floor events even if they feel forced; the friendships that make a hall feel like home usually start there. Prop your door open when you are around and up for company. Living-learning communities cluster students by interest or major and make this easier.

When it is not working

A genuine roommate conflict that talking has not fixed can lead to a mediated conversation with your RA and, if needed, a room change once the change period opens. A safety issue is different — report it immediately, do not wait for a process. Contract release for leaving housing entirely has specific grounds and deadlines.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
