Decide with the whole cost
Off campus can be cheaper than a residence hall, but only after you add rent, electricity and heat (Wesconsin winters are the swing factor), internet, renter's insurance, a parking permit or the bus, groceries, and a furniture budget for year one. Write the full monthly number down and compare it to the room-and-board rate honestly.
Timing the search
The Porter Falls student rental market moves early — a lot of leases for the next August are signed in October and November. Start looking right after fall break for the best choice; wait until spring and you are choosing from what is left, usually farther out or in worse shape.
Reading the lease
Before you sign: know the exact start and end dates, whether it is joint-and-several (each roommate is liable for the whole rent if one leaves), what "utilities included" actually covers, the subletting rules, and how much notice ends it. The Student Legal Services office will review a lease with you for free before you sign — use it.
Roommates
A roommate agreement covering rent split, bills, guests, cleaning, and what happens if someone moves out prevents most of the fights. Do it even with close friends. If you are matching with someone you do not know, meet in person and talk about sleep schedules and money before you commit to a year together.
Setting up utilities and the move
Put electricity, gas, and internet in someone's name a week before move-in — same-day connection is not guaranteed. Get renter's insurance; it is inexpensive and the university's coverage does not extend off campus. Do a written, photographed move-in inspection and send it to the landlord so the security deposit is not a fight in a year.
Staying connected to campus
Commuter students get a locker, a commuter lounge, priority for certain parking permits, and access to the same advising, tutoring, and events. The Porter Loop and the city bus pass (included in fees) both reach the main rental areas. Plan a real weekly reason to be on campus outside class so the move does not shrink your college experience.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
