What the audit is
The degree audit in MyPorter compares the courses you have taken, are taking, and have registered for against every requirement of your declared program under your catalog year. It is the university's official checklist for graduation — an adviser uses the same screen you do.
Run it after every registration and every grade cycle. It is only as current as your record.
Reading the blocks
Requirements are grouped into blocks: general education, the major core, major electives, a college requirement, and free electives. Each block shows a status — complete, in progress, or not started — and lists which specific courses satisfied it. A green block is done; a block "in progress" is only counting registered or current courses and can revert if you drop one.
Catalog year matters
You are held to the requirements in effect when you entered the program, not the current catalog, for up to a set number of years. A program that changes its requirements does not move the goalposts on continuing students. If a newer catalog is clearly better for you, you can ask to opt into it — all of it, not a mix.
Exceptions and substitutions
When a course you took should count for a requirement it is not mapping to — a transfer course, an approved substitution, a topics course — the department files an exception and it appears on the audit as a note under that block. If you were told a substitution was approved and it is not showing after a few weeks, email the department; verbal approvals do not update the system.
The "what-if" audit
The what-if tool runs the same audit against a different major or minor without changing your record. Use it before a major change to see exactly how many of your existing credits carry over, and use it each spring to sanity-check that a minor you are pursuing is actually on track.
What it does not check
The audit checks requirements, not the residency rule (a minimum number of your final credits earned at Porter), not the 2.00 minimum GPA in the major some programs require, and not time limits on old credit. Your graduation check with the Registrar the term before you finish catches these — do not skip it.
