What a hold does
A hold is a flag placed on your account by an office that stops one or more actions — most often registration, but sometimes transcript release, diploma release, or grade viewing. The system will not let you register while a registration hold is active, no matter your appointment time. Holds are visible in the student portal with the office to contact and the reason.
The common ones
Financial hold (an unpaid balance past due — the Bursar), advising hold (you must meet with your adviser before registering — routine, especially for first- and second-years), immunization or health-form hold (a missing record — Student Health), missing-transcript hold (a final transcript from a prior school never arrived — Admissions/Registrar), conduct hold (an unresolved student-conduct matter — Dean of Students), and library or equipment hold (unreturned items or unpaid fines).
Clear them early
Check your portal for holds a week or two before your registration appointment, not the morning of. An advising hold means booking a meeting now, before your adviser's calendar fills. A financial hold may take a day or two to lift after you pay. A missing-transcript hold can take longer because it depends on another institution.
How each clears
Financial: pay the past-due amount or set up an approved payment plan, then the Bursar releases it. Advising: meet with your adviser, who removes it. Health: submit the missing form to Student Health. Transcript: have the prior school send an official final transcript. Conduct: complete whatever the Dean of Students office specified. The office that placed a hold is the only one that can remove it.
If a hold appears unfairly
If you believe a hold is a mistake — you paid, the transcript was sent, the form is on file — contact the office directly with your evidence (a receipt, a tracking number). They can look it up and release it. Do not wait and hope it clears itself before your registration window.
Plan around your appointment
You register at an assigned date and time based on earned credits. A hold that is not cleared by then costs you your place in line for popular courses even if you clear it an hour later. Treat "clear all holds" as a task to finish two weeks before registration opens.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
