About American Sign Language
Conversational ASL and an introduction to Deaf culture and community. Courses carry the ASL subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 8 ASL courses listed, 1 is introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 2 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the American Sign Language department is the only way around them.
ASL 1010 — American Sign Language I 4 cr
Fingerspelling, basic vocabulary and grammar, and simple conversation, taught in a voice-off environment.
Prerequisite: none.
ASL 1020 — American Sign Language II 4 cr
Expanded vocabulary, classifiers, spatial referencing, and narrative structure.
Prerequisite: ASL 1010.
ASL 2010 — American Sign Language III 3 cr
Complex grammar, register, and extended conversation and storytelling.
Prerequisite: ASL 1020.
ASL 2020 — American Sign Language IV 3 cr
Fluency, idiomatic usage, and discussion of abstract topics.
Prerequisite: ASL 2010.
ASL 2300 — Deaf Culture and Community 3 cr
History, values, art, and social organization of the Deaf community, and audism and language rights.
Prerequisite: none.
ASL 2500 — Linguistics of ASL 3 cr
Phonology, morphology, and syntax of ASL, and how signed languages compare with spoken ones.
Prerequisite: ASL 2010.
ASL 3100 — Introduction to Interpreting 3 cr
The interpreting process, ethics, and role, with introductory practice between ASL and English.
Prerequisite: ASL 2020.
ASL 3300 — Deaf Education and Access 3 cr
Approaches to educating Deaf and hard-of-hearing students and designing accessible environments.
Prerequisite: ASL 2300.
