About Anthropology
The comparative study of humans across time, place, and culture. Courses carry the ANTH subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 ANTH courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Anthropology department is the only way around them.
ANTH 1000 — Introduction to Anthropology 3 cr
The four fields — cultural, biological, archaeological, and linguistic anthropology — and the concept of culture.
Prerequisite: none.
ANTH 2100 — Cultural Anthropology 3 cr
Kinship, economy, politics, religion, and change, illustrated through ethnographies from around the world.
Prerequisite: ANTH 1000.
ANTH 2200 — Archaeology 3 cr
How archaeologists find, excavate, date, and interpret material remains to reconstruct past societies.
Prerequisite: ANTH 1000.
ANTH 2300 — Biological Anthropology 3 cr
Human evolution, primatology, human variation, and the biology of contemporary populations.
Prerequisite: ANTH 1000.
ANTH 2400 — Linguistic Anthropology 3 cr
Language and culture, variation, multilingualism, and how speech constructs identity and power.
Prerequisite: ANTH 1000.
ANTH 3100 — Ethnographic Methods 4 cr
Participant observation, interviewing, field notes, ethics, and writing up a small fieldwork project.
Prerequisite: ANTH 2100.
ANTH 3300 — Medical Anthropology 3 cr
Culture, illness, and healing systems; global health; and the social production of disease.
Prerequisite: ANTH 2100.
ANTH 3500 — Applied and Business Anthropology 3 cr
Using ethnographic methods in design, user research, organizations, and community work.
Prerequisite: ANTH 2100.
ANTH 4900 — Senior Project in Anthropology 3 cr
A fieldwork-based or library-based research project with a written report and a presentation.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
