About Apparel & Textile Design
Designing and developing garments and textile products. Courses carry the APRL subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 APRL courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 3 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Apparel & Textile Design department is the only way around them.
APRL 1200 — Apparel Construction I 3 cr
Machine operation, seams and finishes, and constructing a garment from a commercial pattern.
Prerequisite: none.
APRL 1400 — Textiles 3 cr
Fibers, yarns, fabric structures, finishes, and performance testing for end use.
Prerequisite: none.
APRL 2100 — Fashion Illustration and Flats 3 cr
Croquis, rendering, and technical flat drawings for a line.
Prerequisite: none.
APRL 2300 — Patternmaking I 3 cr
Drafting slopers, dart manipulation, and developing patterns for basic garments.
Prerequisite: APRL 1200.
APRL 2500 — Draping 3 cr
Developing designs on the form and translating them to patterns.
Prerequisite: APRL 2300.
APRL 3100 — Apparel Construction II 3 cr
Tailoring, knits, and industry construction methods and quality standards.
Prerequisite: APRL 2300.
APRL 3300 — CAD for Apparel 3 cr
Digital patternmaking, grading, marker making, and tech packs.
Prerequisite: APRL 2100.
APRL 3500 — Sustainable and Functional Apparel 3 cr
Materials and processes for sustainability, and designing for protection, sport, and accessibility.
Prerequisite: APRL 1400.
APRL 4900 — Senior Line Development 4 cr
Concept through a produced capsule collection, shown in the senior fashion event.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
