About Architectural Technology
The design and documentation of buildings, from concept to construction set. Courses carry the ARCH subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 ARCH courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Architectural Technology department is the only way around them.
ARCH 1100 — Architectural Graphics 3 cr
Hand drafting, lettering, orthographic and paraline drawing, and reading a set of building documents.
Prerequisite: none.
ARCH 1300 — Building Information Modeling I 3 cr
Modeling a small building in BIM software: walls, floors, roofs, families, and sheets.
Prerequisite: ARCH 1100.
ARCH 2100 — Architectural Design Studio I 4 cr
Programming, site analysis, and schematic design of a small building, presented at reviews.
Prerequisite: ARCH 1300.
ARCH 2300 — Building Construction I 3 cr
Wood and light-frame construction: foundations, framing, envelope, and detailing.
Prerequisite: ARCH 1100.
ARCH 2500 — Building Construction II 3 cr
Steel, concrete, and masonry systems and commercial detailing.
Prerequisite: ARCH 2300.
ARCH 3100 — Architectural Design Studio II 4 cr
A larger, code-driven project developed to design-development drawings.
Prerequisite: ARCH 2100.
ARCH 3300 — Building Systems 3 cr
Structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and how they coordinate in a building.
Prerequisite: ARCH 2300.
ARCH 3500 — Codes, Accessibility, and Specifications 3 cr
The building code, accessibility standards, life safety, and writing project specifications.
Prerequisite: ARCH 2500.
ARCH 4900 — Construction Documents Capstone 4 cr
A complete, coordinated construction set for a real project, reviewed by practicing architects.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
