Engineering applied to medicine and human health. Courses carry the BME subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

Of the 8 BME courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 1 is advanced undergraduate (300–499). 0 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Biomedical Engineering department is the only way around them.
BME 2000 — Introduction to Biomedical Engineering 3 cr
The subfields — biomechanics, biomaterials, instrumentation, imaging, tissue engineering — and the design process in a regulated industry.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400, BIOL 1010.
BME 2500 — Biomaterials 3 cr
Metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites for implants and devices; biocompatibility; and degradation.
Prerequisite: CHEM 1120, MFGE 2500.
BME 3100 — Biomechanics 3 cr
Mechanics of tissues, joints, and gait, and the design of orthopedic and rehabilitation devices.
Prerequisite: ME 2100.
BME 3300 — Biomedical Instrumentation 4 cr
Sensors and amplifiers for physiological signals, noise and safety, and building a measurement system.
Prerequisite: EE 2000.
BME 3500 — Medical Imaging 3 cr
The physics and signal processing behind X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and MRI.
Prerequisite: PHYS 2020.
BME 3700 — Physiology for Engineers 3 cr
Quantitative treatment of the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and nervous systems.
Prerequisite: BIOL 1010.
BME 4100 — Medical Device Design and Regulation 3 cr
Design controls, risk management, verification and validation, and the regulatory pathway.
Prerequisite: BME 2000.
BME 4900 — Biomedical Senior Design 3 cr
A team designs and prototypes a medical device or system for a clinical sponsor, with a design-history file.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
