About Career & Technical Education
Preparing teachers for technical, trade, and applied classrooms. Courses carry the CTE subject code and are offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 8 CTE courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Career & Technical Education department is the only way around them.
CTE 2000 — Introduction to CTE 3 cr
The history and purposes of career and technical education, program areas, and the licensure pathway.
Prerequisite: none.
CTE 2200 — Teaching Technical Skills 3 cr
Task analysis, demonstration, guided practice, and assessing skill performance safely.
Prerequisite: CTE 2000.
CTE 2400 — Laboratory and Shop Management 3 cr
Facility layout, tool and material control, safety programs, and budgeting a program.
Prerequisite: CTE 2000.
CTE 3100 — Curriculum in CTE 3 cr
Aligning to industry standards, developing courses and units, and integrating academics.
Prerequisite: CTE 2200.
CTE 3300 — Work-Based Learning 3 cr
Coordinating internships, apprenticeships, and school-based enterprises, and employer partnerships.
Prerequisite: CTE 2000.
CTE 3500 — Student Organizations and Leadership 2 cr
Advising a career and technical student organization and building student leadership.
Prerequisite: CTE 2000.
CTE 3700 — Assessment in Technical Education 3 cr
Performance rubrics, industry certifications, and program evaluation.
Prerequisite: CTE 3100.
CTE 4900 — CTE Student Teaching 12 cr
A full supervised teaching semester in a technical classroom, with a seminar and portfolio.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
