How people create meaning together — interpersonal to public. Courses carry the COMM subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 COMM courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 2 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Communication Studies department is the only way around them.
COMM 1100 — Public Speaking 3 cr
Researching, organizing, and delivering informative and persuasive speeches, with repeated practice and feedback.
Prerequisite: none.
COMM 1300 — Interpersonal Communication 3 cr
Perception, listening, self-disclosure, conflict, and relational maintenance.
Prerequisite: none.
COMM 2100 — Small Group Communication 3 cr
Roles, norms, decision-making, leadership, and facilitating a productive meeting.
Prerequisite: COMM 1100.
COMM 2300 — Communication Theory 3 cr
Major theories across contexts and how theory guides analysis and practice.
Prerequisite: COMM 1300.
COMM 2500 — Intercultural Communication 3 cr
Culture and identity, adaptation, and communicating across difference.
Prerequisite: COMM 1300.
COMM 3100 — Organizational Communication 3 cr
Communication in organizations: culture, networks, change, and leadership messaging.
Prerequisite: COMM 2100.
COMM 3300 — Persuasion and Social Influence 3 cr
Attitude change, message design, and the ethics of influence.
Prerequisite: COMM 2300.
COMM 3500 — Communication Research Methods 4 cr
Quantitative and qualitative methods and a small applied study.
Prerequisite: COMM 2300.
COMM 4900 — Capstone in Communication 3 cr
An applied project — a campaign, training, or study — for a real client or context.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
