Learning to teach — theory, methods, and clinical practice. Courses carry the EDUC subject code and are offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 EDUC courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Education department is the only way around them.
EDUC 1000 — Schools and Society 3 cr
The purposes, history, and politics of schooling, and observing in classrooms.
Prerequisite: none.
EDUC 2100 — Human Development and Learning 3 cr
Cognitive, social, and emotional development and the theories of learning that inform teaching.
Prerequisite: EDUC 1000.
EDUC 2300 — Educational Psychology and Assessment 3 cr
Motivation, classroom management, and designing assessments that measure what they claim to.
Prerequisite: EDUC 2100.
EDUC 2500 — Teaching Diverse Learners 3 cr
Culturally responsive teaching, language learners, and differentiating instruction.
Prerequisite: EDUC 1000.
EDUC 3100 — Literacy Across the Curriculum 3 cr
Reading and writing to learn in every subject, and supporting struggling readers.
Prerequisite: EDUC 2300.
EDUC 3300 — Curriculum and Instructional Design 3 cr
Standards, backward design, unit and lesson planning, and instructional strategies.
Prerequisite: EDUC 2300.
EDUC 3500 — Special Education Foundations 3 cr
Disability categories, the IEP process, inclusion, and collaboration with specialists.
Prerequisite: EDUC 2100.
EDUC 4100 — Methods and Clinical Practice 4 cr
Content-specific methods paired with a supervised classroom placement.
Prerequisite: EDUC 3300.
EDUC 4900 — Student Teaching 12 cr
A full-time supervised teaching semester with a cooperating teacher, plus a seminar and a professional portfolio.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
