Reading closely, writing well, and studying literature and language. Courses carry the ENGL subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

How the sequence works

Of the 9 ENGL courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 1 is advanced undergraduate (300–499). 0 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the English department is the only way around them.

ENGL 1010 — Composition I 3 cr

Academic writing as inquiry: developing an idea, using sources responsibly, and revising with feedback.

Prerequisite: placement.

ENGL 1020 — Composition II 3 cr

Research-based argument, evaluating evidence, and writing for different audiences and genres.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010.

ENGL 2100 — Introduction to Literature 3 cr

Reading fiction, poetry, and drama closely and writing about them with precision.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010.

ENGL 2300 — Creative Writing 3 cr

Workshop practice in poetry and short fiction, with attention to craft and revision.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010.

ENGL 2500 — Technical and Professional Writing 3 cr

Documents that do work — reports, proposals, instructions, correspondence — written for clarity and use.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1020.

ENGL 3100 — British Literature Survey 3 cr

Major works and movements from the medieval period to the modern, in context.

Prerequisite: ENGL 2100.

ENGL 3200 — American Literature Survey 3 cr

Major works and movements in American writing and the debates that shaped the canon.

Prerequisite: ENGL 2100.

ENGL 3500 — Rhetoric and Style 3 cr

How prose persuades and moves; analyzing and practicing style at the sentence and the whole-piece level.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1020.

ENGL 4900 — Senior Seminar in English 3 cr

A focused study culminating in a substantial critical or creative project and its presentation.

Prerequisite: senior standing.
