About Health Information Management
Managing health data, records, and information systems. Courses carry the HIM subject code and are offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 HIM courses listed, 4 are introductory (numbers under 300), 1 is advanced undergraduate (300–499). 2 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Health Information Management department is the only way around them.
HIM 1500 — Introduction to Health Information Management 3 cr
The health record, the health-care delivery system, and the HIM profession and its credentials.
Prerequisite: none.
HIM 2100 — Medical Terminology 3 cr
Word roots, prefixes, and suffixes across body systems, and reading clinical documentation.
Prerequisite: none.
HIM 2200 — Pathophysiology and Pharmacology 4 cr
Disease processes and drug therapy across body systems, at the level HIM professionals need.
Prerequisite: BIOL 1010.
HIM 2500 — Health Data Content and Structure 3 cr
Data sets, documentation standards, data quality, and the legal health record.
Prerequisite: HIM 1500.
HIM 3100 — Coding and Classification Systems I 4 cr
ICD diagnosis and procedure coding conventions and guidelines, with hands-on practice.
Prerequisite: HIM 2100, HIM 2200.
HIM 3200 — Coding and Classification Systems II 4 cr
CPT coding, reimbursement methodologies, and the revenue cycle.
Prerequisite: HIM 3100.
HIM 3400 — Health Information Systems 3 cr
Electronic health records, interoperability, implementation, and system selection.
Prerequisite: HIM 2500.
HIM 3600 — Health Law, Privacy, and Compliance 3 cr
Release of information, HIPAA, retention, e-discovery, and compliance programs.
Prerequisite: HIM 2500.
HIM 4900 — HIM Professional Practice 4 cr
A supervised practicum across HIM functions and a management project.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
