About Information Technology
Designing, deploying, and supporting the technology an organization runs on. Courses carry the IT subject code and are offered through the College of Computing & Information Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 IT courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Information Technology department is the only way around them.
IT 1300 — IT Fundamentals 3 cr
Hardware, operating systems, networking basics, virtualization, and the help-desk skills of diagnosing a problem methodically and communicating with the person who reported it.
Prerequisite: none.
IT 2100 — Networking I 4 cr
Addressing, subnetting, switching, routing, wireless, and troubleshooting a small network end to end in the lab.
Prerequisite: IT 1300.
IT 2400 — Server Administration 3 cr
Provisioning and maintaining servers and services: directory services, file and print, web and database hosting, backups, and monitoring.
Prerequisite: IT 1300.
IT 2700 — Scripting for Administrators 3 cr
Automating repetitive administration with a scripting language: files, processes, APIs, scheduled tasks, and writing scripts other admins can safely run.
Prerequisite: IT 1300.
IT 3200 — Cloud Infrastructure 3 cr
Compute, storage, networking, and identity in a public cloud; infrastructure as code; cost awareness; and migrating a workload from on-premises.
Prerequisite: IT 2400.
IT 3400 — Enterprise Systems and Integration 3 cr
How large organizations connect their systems: middleware, APIs, identity federation, data flows, and the change management around a rollout.
Prerequisite: IT 2400.
IT 3600 — IT Project Management 3 cr
Scoping, planning, and delivering an IT project: stakeholders, budgets, vendors, risk, and closing out.
Prerequisite: junior standing.
IT 3800 — IT Service Management 3 cr
Service desks, ticketing, service-level agreements, change and incident processes, and measuring whether support is actually improving.
Prerequisite: IT 2400.
IT 4900 — IT Capstone 3 cr
A team designs and implements an infrastructure or integration solution for a sponsor, documented and handed off for operation.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
