About Machine Tool Technology

Precision machining, from manual tools to multi-axis CNC. Courses carry the MACH subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

How the sequence works

Of the 9 MACH courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Machine Tool Technology department is the only way around them.

MACH 1100 — Machining Fundamentals 4 cr

Measurement, layout, bench work, and safe operation of the drill press, band saw, and grinder.

Prerequisite: none.

MACH 1300 — Manual Lathe Operations 4 cr

Turning, facing, drilling, boring, threading, and taper work to a print.

Prerequisite: MACH 1100.

MACH 1500 — Manual Milling Operations 4 cr

Squaring stock, slotting, drilling, boring, and using a rotary table and DRO.

Prerequisite: MACH 1100.

MACH 2100 — CNC Programming and Operation I 4 cr

G- and M-code, work and tool offsets, and running turning and milling programs.

Prerequisite: MACH 1300, MACH 1500.

MACH 2300 — CAM Programming 4 cr

Generating toolpaths from a CAD model, simulation, and post-processing for the machine.

Prerequisite: MACH 2100.

MACH 2500 — Precision Grinding 3 cr

Surface and cylindrical grinding, wheel selection, and holding tenths.

Prerequisite: MACH 1500.

MACH 2700 — Metrology and Quality 3 cr

Gage blocks, comparators, CMM basics, GD&T, and inspection planning.

Prerequisite: MACH 1100.

MACH 3100 — Multi-Axis CNC Machining 4 cr

4- and 5-axis setups, work holding, and machining complex geometry.

Prerequisite: MACH 2300.

MACH 3300 — Tool and Die Making 4 cr

Jigs, fixtures, and the design and build of simple dies and molds.

Prerequisite: MACH 2100.

Planning and advising

Your degree audit shows exactly how MACH courses apply to your requirements; this list only shows what is offered. If you are choosing between two courses, deciding when to take a heavy one, or wondering whether a course will run next term, your academic adviser can tell you. Course availability by term is set close to registration and is not guaranteed by anything on this page.
