About Psychology
The scientific study of mind and behavior. Courses carry the PSYC subject code and are offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 PSYC courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Psychology department is the only way around them.
PSYC 1000 — Introduction to Psychology 3 cr
A survey of the field: biological bases, learning, memory, development, personality, social behavior, and disorders.
Prerequisite: none.
PSYC 2100 — Research Methods 4 cr
Designing studies, operationalizing variables, sampling, ethics, and writing in the discipline's style, with a small study.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1000.
PSYC 2200 — Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences 3 cr
Descriptive statistics, probability, t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and regression, with software.
Prerequisite: MATH 1400.
PSYC 2400 — Developmental Psychology 3 cr
Physical, cognitive, and social development across the lifespan and the theories that organize it.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1000.
PSYC 2600 — Social Psychology 3 cr
Attitudes, persuasion, conformity, group behavior, attribution, and prejudice.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1000.
PSYC 3100 — Cognitive Psychology 3 cr
Attention, perception, memory, language, and decision-making, and the experiments that reveal them.
Prerequisite: PSYC 2100.
PSYC 3300 — Abnormal Psychology 3 cr
Classification, causes, and treatment of psychological disorders, and the debates around diagnosis.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1000.
PSYC 3500 — Biological Psychology 3 cr
Neurons, neurotransmission, brain systems, and the biological bases of behavior.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1000.
PSYC 4900 — Senior Seminar in Psychology 3 cr
A capstone that integrates the major through a literature review or empirical project and a formal presentation.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
