About Social Work
Helping individuals, families, and communities, guided by social-justice values. Courses carry the SOCW subject code and are offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 SOCW courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Social Work department is the only way around them.
SOCW 1500 — Introduction to Social Work 3 cr
The profession's history, values, fields of practice, and the social-welfare system.
Prerequisite: none.
SOCW 2100 — Human Behavior and the Social Environment 3 cr
Development across the lifespan in the context of families, groups, organizations, and communities.
Prerequisite: SOCW 1500, PSYC 1000.
SOCW 2300 — Social Welfare Policy 3 cr
How policies are made, major programs, and analyzing a policy for its effects on vulnerable groups.
Prerequisite: SOCW 1500.
SOCW 3100 — Social Work Practice I: Individuals and Families 4 cr
Engagement, assessment, planning, and intervention skills, practiced in role-play and video review.
Prerequisite: SOCW 2100.
SOCW 3300 — Social Work Practice II: Groups and Communities 3 cr
Group facilitation, community organizing, and program development.
Prerequisite: SOCW 3100.
SOCW 3500 — Social Work Research 3 cr
Practice evaluation, program evaluation, and using evidence to guide intervention.
Prerequisite: SOCW 2100.
SOCW 3700 — Diversity, Oppression, and Social Justice 3 cr
Systems of privilege and oppression and culturally responsive, anti-oppressive practice.
Prerequisite: SOCW 1500.
SOCW 4800 — Field Practicum I 4 cr
A supervised agency placement with an integrative seminar.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
SOCW 4900 — Field Practicum II 4 cr
Continued supervised practice, a capstone project, and preparation for licensure and employment.
Prerequisite: SOCW 4800.
