About Spanish
Proficiency in Spanish and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Courses carry the SPAN subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 8 SPAN courses listed, 1 is introductory (numbers under 300), 1 is advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Spanish department is the only way around them.
SPAN 1010 — Elementary Spanish I 4 cr
Foundations of listening, speaking, reading, and writing for everyday communication.
Prerequisite: none.
SPAN 1020 — Elementary Spanish II 4 cr
Continued development of the four skills, past tenses, and cultural literacy.
Prerequisite: SPAN 1010.
SPAN 2010 — Intermediate Spanish I 3 cr
Narration and description in past and future, expanded vocabulary, and short readings.
Prerequisite: SPAN 1020.
SPAN 2020 — Intermediate Spanish II 3 cr
The subjunctive, complex sentences, and reading and discussing authentic texts.
Prerequisite: SPAN 2010.
SPAN 2500 — Spanish Conversation 3 cr
Fluency and confidence through structured discussion of contemporary topics.
Prerequisite: SPAN 2010.
SPAN 3100 — Spanish for the Professions 3 cr
Health-care, business, and public-service vocabulary and communication scenarios.
Prerequisite: SPAN 2020.
SPAN 3300 — Introduction to Hispanic Literature 3 cr
Reading and analyzing poetry, fiction, and drama from Spain and Latin America.
Prerequisite: SPAN 2020.
SPAN 3500 — Latin American Culture and Civilization 3 cr
History, society, art, and current issues across Latin America, taught in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPAN 2020.
