About Studio Art
Making, seeing, and thinking through visual media. Courses carry the ART subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 ART courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 4 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Studio Art department is the only way around them.
ART 1100 — Drawing I 3 cr
Observation, line, value, proportion, and composition from still life, the figure, and the landscape.
Prerequisite: none.
ART 1300 — 2D Foundations 3 cr
The elements and principles of design worked through hands-on projects and critique.
Prerequisite: none.
ART 1500 — 3D Foundations 3 cr
Form, space, and material through additive and subtractive processes.
Prerequisite: none.
ART 2100 — Painting I 3 cr
Color mixing, paint handling, and building a painting from underpainting to resolution.
Prerequisite: ART 1100.
ART 2300 — Digital Imaging 3 cr
Raster and vector tools, image capture and manipulation, and output for print and screen.
Prerequisite: ART 1300.
ART 2500 — Sculpture I 3 cr
Modeling, mold-making, casting, and fabrication, with shop safety.
Prerequisite: ART 1500.
ART 2700 — Printmaking I 3 cr
Relief and intaglio processes, editioning, and the print as a medium.
Prerequisite: ART 1100.
ART 3100 — Art History Survey 3 cr
A chronological survey of visual art from antiquity to the present, with an emphasis on looking and context.
Prerequisite: none.
ART 4900 — Senior Studio 6 cr
A sustained, self-directed body of work developed with faculty and exhibited in the senior show.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
