About User Experience Design
Research-driven design of digital products and services. Courses carry the UXD subject code and are offered through the College of Arts, Design & Communication. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 UXD courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the User Experience Design department is the only way around them.
UXD 1500 — Foundations of UX 3 cr
The design process, user-centered thinking, and the roles on a product team, through a small project.
Prerequisite: none.
UXD 2100 — UX Research Methods 3 cr
Interviews, surveys, contextual inquiry, and usability testing, and synthesizing findings into insight.
Prerequisite: UXD 1500.
UXD 2300 — Information Architecture 3 cr
Structuring content, navigation, labeling, and card sorting and tree testing.
Prerequisite: UXD 1500.
UXD 2500 — Interaction Design 3 cr
Flows, states, patterns, microinteractions, and designing for edge cases.
Prerequisite: UXD 1500.
UXD 3100 — Prototyping 3 cr
Low- to high-fidelity prototypes, design systems, and handoff to development.
Prerequisite: UXD 2500.
UXD 3300 — Accessibility and Inclusive Design 3 cr
WCAG, assistive technology, and designing and testing for a range of abilities and contexts.
Prerequisite: UXD 2300.
UXD 3500 — Service Design 3 cr
Journey mapping, blueprints, and designing across touchpoints and channels.
Prerequisite: UXD 2100.
UXD 3700 — UX Strategy and Metrics 3 cr
Aligning design with business goals, prioritization, experimentation, and measuring outcomes.
Prerequisite: UXD 3100.
UXD 4900 — UX Capstone 3 cr
A full product design — research through validated prototype — for a real client, presented as a case study.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
