About Welding Technology

Joining metals to code across the major welding processes. Courses carry the WELD subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

How the sequence works

Of the 9 WELD courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 3 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Welding Technology department is the only way around them.

WELD 1100 — Welding Fundamentals and Safety 3 cr

Shop safety, oxy-fuel cutting, and an introduction to the arc processes and weld symbols.

Prerequisite: none.

WELD 1300 — Shielded Metal Arc Welding 4 cr

Stick welding in all positions on plate, electrode selection, and visual inspection.

Prerequisite: WELD 1100.

WELD 1500 — Gas Metal and Flux-Cored Arc Welding 4 cr

MIG and flux-cored welding on plate and sheet, transfer modes, and parameter setup.

Prerequisite: WELD 1100.

WELD 2100 — Gas Tungsten Arc Welding 4 cr

TIG welding of steel, stainless, and aluminum, torch control, and filler selection.

Prerequisite: WELD 1300.

WELD 2300 — Pipe Welding 4 cr

Groove welds on pipe in fixed positions to code, root through cap.

Prerequisite: WELD 1300, WELD 2100.

WELD 2500 — Welding Metallurgy 3 cr

Heat effects on metal, distortion and residual stress, cracking, and preheat and post-weld heat treatment.

Prerequisite: WELD 1300.

WELD 2700 — Weld Inspection and Testing 3 cr

Visual, dye-penetrant, magnetic-particle, and ultrasonic testing, and reading a welding procedure specification.

Prerequisite: WELD 1500.

WELD 3100 — Welding Fabrication 4 cr

Blueprint reading, layout, fixturing, and building a fabricated assembly to tolerance.

Prerequisite: WELD 1500.

WELD 3300 — Robotic and Automated Welding 3 cr

Programming and operating a welding robot, fixturing for automation, and quality control.

Prerequisite: WELD 1500.

Planning and advising

Your degree audit shows exactly how WELD courses apply to your requirements; this list only shows what is offered. If you are choosing between two courses, deciding when to take a heavy one, or wondering whether a course will run next term, your academic adviser can tell you. Course availability by term is set close to registration and is not guaranteed by anything on this page.
