Campus Life

Substance-Free & Recovery Housing

A residence hall floor with no alcohol or drug use by anyone, ever, including of-age residents and guests — and a separate, smaller community built specifically around recovery.

Home Substance-Free & Recovery Housing

Substance-free floors

Available in three residence halls, a substance-free floor prohibits alcohol and drug possession or use in the space entirely — not just by underage residents, the usual campus-wide rule, but by everyone, including 21-plus residents and their guests. Students choose it during housing selection the same way they would choose any other themed floor.

The Collegiate Recovery Community

A smaller, separate program for students in active recovery from substance use disorder, the Collegiate Recovery Community pairs dedicated housing with weekly peer support meetings, a recovery coach, and priority scheduling around 12-step or SMART Recovery meeting times. It is confidential by design — participation is never disclosed to instructors or other offices without the student’s consent.

Who it is for, and how to apply

The Collegiate Recovery Community is open to any enrolled student with at least a defined period of sobriety, verified through a confidential intake conversation rather than a public application; a prospective or admitted student can start that conversation before committing to enroll.

Why this exists separately from general substance-free housing

A student in early recovery has different needs than a student who simply prefers a quieter, substance-free floor — consistent peer accountability and a coach who checks in, not just an absence of alcohol nearby. Combining the two into one program tends to under-serve both groups, which is why Porter keeps them distinct.
