Textbook affordability

The programs that lower or remove the cost of course materials.

Knowing the cost before you register

Each section in the schedule shows an estimated materials cost and a marker if it uses only free or library-available resources. Filtering for low- and no-cost sections is a legitimate way to build a schedule, and advisors will help. The estimate is set by the instructor when they submit adoptions, weeks before the term.

If the cost is still a barrier

The library's course-reserve collection covers most required texts for short in-building loans, the bookstore runs a rental program for print titles, and a small course-materials grant through the Dean of Students can cover a specific book for a student in a bind. Do not skip buying a required text quietly — ask, because one of these usually closes the gap.

In and around Porter Falls

Support at Porter is deliberately clustered on the first two levels of Halvorsen Library so a student can move from one kind of help to another without leaving the building or re-explaining the situation. Walk-in hours run late Monday through Thursday during the semester, and everything can also be booked through MyPorter.

The practical details

Inclusive Access: Digital materials billed with tuition at a negotiated rate; opt out by a deadline each term. Open textbooks: Free, faculty-adopted materials in a growing number of sections, flagged in the schedule. Reserve copies: One copy of most required texts held at the library for two-hour in-building loan. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Student Success Center (Halvorsen Library, Level 1). Call (715) 555–0170 or email success@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
