It is a conversation, not a form
The "interactive process" is the legal and practical name for how accommodations are set: you describe the barrier, the access coordinator asks about your experience and reviews documentation, and together you identify accommodations that remove the barrier without fundamentally altering the course. It can take a couple of meetings, and it can be revisited.
Matched to the barrier, not the diagnosis
Two students with the same diagnosis can have different accommodations because the barrier is different — one needs extended test time, another needs materials in an accessible format, another needs attendance flexibility. The question is always "what specifically gets in your way here, and what removes it?"
Reasonable, and its limits
An accommodation must be reasonable: it cannot fundamentally alter an essential requirement of the course or program, lower academic standards, or pose an undue burden. A clinical program can require the physical tasks that are genuinely essential to the profession; it must still accommodate everything that is not. If an accommodation is denied on "fundamental alteration" grounds, that reasoning should be specific and documented.
Faculty notification
You get a letter listing your approved accommodations and choose which courses to send it to. A brief conversation with each instructor about logistics — where you will test, how notes will work, how attendance flexibility applies to this course's structure — makes implementation smooth. Send it early; retroactive accommodation is generally not available.
When an instructor pushes back
If an instructor questions an approved accommodation, does not implement it, or says "I don't do that in my class," contact your access coordinator promptly. Resolving it is their job — usually a direct conversation with the instructor or department. You should not have to argue it yourself or choose between an accommodation and a grade.
Revisiting
If an accommodation is not working, if your condition changes, or if a new course structure creates a barrier the current plan does not cover, ask to meet again. The plan is meant to change as your situation does.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
