Start with the certifying official
The School Certifying Official in the Veteran Resource Center is the person who submits your enrollment certification to the VA so your benefits pay. Meet them before your first term and every term after you register — certification is not automatic, and a late certification means a late payment. They also explain which chapter of benefits fits your situation.
Credit for military training
Your Joint Services Transcript (or Community College of the Air Force transcript) is evaluated against a national credit guide after admission. Military training and occupational experience frequently convert to credit — sometimes a full semester's worth — especially in the technical programs. A prior-learning adviser can push for course-specific equivalencies with documentation.
The Veteran Resource Center
A dedicated space with study room, computers, a lounge, and staff who coordinate benefits, connect you with peers, and host visiting county and federal VA representatives on scheduled days. For many military-connected students the center is the difference between transferring in anonymously and landing in a community.
Priority registration and flexibility
Military-connected students typically get priority registration so benefit certification and required sequences line up. Students in the reserves or Guard who are activated mid-term get coordinated support for withdrawal, tuition adjustment, housing, and re-enrollment when they return — bring your orders to the center as soon as you have them.
Dependents and survivors
Spouses and children using transferred benefits or survivor benefits are certified through the same office and welcome in the center. The processes differ by benefit type; the certifying official sorts out which forms apply to you.
The transition itself
Coming from a structured environment to a campus where you manage your own schedule is a real adjustment, and being older than most classmates can feel isolating at first. Peer mentoring through the center, the counseling center's familiarity with military transition, and connecting with the student veterans organization all help. Use them early.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
