The system blocks, a person overrides
Registration is automated and it enforces rules: a course is full, you have not passed the prerequisite, two courses overlap in time, you lack the class standing, the course is restricted to a major. An override is a manual authorization — usually a permission number or an electronic flag from the department — that tells the system to let you register despite one specific block.
Types you might need
Capacity override (a seat in a full section), prerequisite override (you have equivalent preparation the system cannot see — a transfer course, a challenge exam, instructor judgment), time-conflict override (two courses overlap slightly and both instructors agree), restriction override (you are not the major the course is reserved for but have permission), and consent-of-instructor for courses that require it by design.
How to get one
Ask the department or the instructor, whichever the course listing directs you to. Explain the specific block and why the exception is warranted. If granted, you receive a permission number or the department enters an electronic override tied to your student ID — then you still have to register yourself in the system before the deadline. The override does not enroll you.
It is specific and time-limited
An override usually clears exactly one block for exactly one section, and it expires — often at the add deadline. A prerequisite override does not also give you a seat if the section is full; you may need two overrides. Read what you were granted.
When a prerequisite override is a bad idea
If you are asking to skip a prerequisite you genuinely have not covered, the override lets you register but not keep up. Instructors grant these when your preparation is real but invisible to the system, not as a favor. Be honest with yourself about which case you are in.
After you get it
Register immediately and confirm the course shows on your schedule. Keep the permission number and any email until the class is safely on your record. If it will not apply, contact the department the same day — do not wait until the deadline.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
