Work-study: award vs. hours

How a Federal Work-Study award translates into a paycheck, and what happens when you hit the limit.

Home / Work-study: award vs. hours

Do the math

Divide the award by your wage to get your total hours for the year, then by the number of weeks you'll work. A $2,400 award at $12/hour over 30 weeks is about 6.7 hours a week. Going over isn't a penalty — the funding source just changes — but plan for it so your paycheck doesn't shrink unexpectedly.

Using it well

Work-study earnings don't count against you on next year's FAFSA the way regular income can, so if you're offered it, it's worth taking. If you don't get a work-study award, you can still work on campus — most jobs are open to everyone.

In and around Porter Falls

The Porter Student Help Desk in Founders Union 118 is the single place to start when it is not obvious which office owns a question.

The practical details

The award: A dollar amount in your aid package — the maximum you can earn in work-study jobs that year, not a guaranteed sum. How it pays: An hourly wage for hours actually worked, paid to you like any job; it does not credit against your tuition bill automatically. At the limit: When your earnings reach the award, work-study funding stops; you either reduce hours or your supervisor moves you to a regular student-wage line. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Porter Student Help Desk (Founders Union, Room 118). Call (715) 555–0120 or email help@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
