The program
The Child & Family Center is a state-licensed, nationally accredited early-childhood program on campus serving infants through age five in age-grouped rooms with low ratios, play-based curriculum, meals and snacks included, daily outdoor time, and full-day and part-day schedules that follow the academic calendar with limited summer care. It is staffed by early-childhood professionals, not students, though education and human-development students do supervised observation and practicum hours through one-way glass and structured placements that do not disrupt the children.
Waitlist and priority
Demand exceeds space, so join the waitlist for your child's age group as early as possible — during pregnancy is not too early for an infant spot. Offers go out as space opens, with priority order: student parents first, then faculty and staff, then the surrounding community. Infant spots are the scarcest and move slowest. Being on the waitlist is free; you can update your needed start date and schedule anytime.
Cost and help paying
Tuition is charged monthly by age group (infants cost the most, reflecting the ratio) and is competitive with quality community care but still a real expense. Help is available and worth pursuing before you rule it out: the federal CCAMPIS grant subsidizes care for eligible low-income student parents, the state child-care subsidy (Wesconsin Shares) applies here, some departments and the student emergency fund can bridge a gap, and the center's staff will sit down and walk you through what you might qualify for.
Beyond the center
Not every student parent needs or can get a center slot, so there is a wider support net: a student-parent group and listserv, lactation rooms across campus, family-friendly study spaces, a backup and sick-child care referral list, priority registration in some colleges so you can build a schedule around care, family housing options, and case management through the Dean of Students for the logistics that pile up. The financial-aid office can also include documented child-care costs in your cost of attendance, which can increase aid eligibility.
