Community-based learning

Courses that build a real project for a Valley organisation into the coursework.

Home / Community-based learning

How a course uses it

An instructor and a community partner agree on a project the students can genuinely deliver in a semester — a survey analysis, a communications plan, a prototype, a grant-ready needs assessment — and it becomes a graded part of the course. The partner commits staff time to brief and review the students; it is a working relationship, not free labour.

Why it is scoped locally

Partnerships stay inside the Valley — Porter Falls, Cedar Bluff, Redgranite — so the same organisations can host year after year and students can visit a site without a long drive. The engagement office keeps the partner list, handles the liability and data agreements, and steps in if a project stalls.

In and around Porter Falls

Porter Falls is a town of about 17,000 that has always shared its workforce with the university. Projects are scoped to the Valley first: Porter, Cedar Bluff and Redgranite before anywhere else.

The practical details

Model: A partner organisation, a scoped project, and course credit for the work. Partners: Nonprofits, city and county offices, schools and small employers in the Valley. Support: A campus office matches courses to partners and handles agreements. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Office of Outreach & Engagement (Millwright Hall, Room 120). Call (715) 555–0235 or email engage@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
