What the office does
The Dean of Students handles student conduct cases, coordinates the university’s response when a student is in crisis or has an emergency, approves absence accommodations for serious situations, and is usually the office that a worried faculty member, parent, or friend contacts first when they are not sure who else to call.
The early-alert and CARE process
Faculty can flag a student who is missing class, struggling academically, or showing signs of distress through the early-alert system; the Dean of Students’ CARE team reviews every flag and reaches out — sometimes with a resource list, sometimes with a direct check-in — rather than waiting for a crisis to force the issue.
Conduct process
Conduct cases follow a published process: notice, a chance to respond, a hearing if the case is contested, and a written outcome, with an appeal path. The student conduct code lays out both the rules and the full process in detail.
If you are worried about someone
Anyone — faculty, staff, a roommate, a parent — can submit a CARE referral for a student who seems to be struggling; it is not only for emergencies, and a referral is not disciplinary. For an active emergency, call University Police or campus safety first, then follow up with a CARE referral.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
