What the audit is
The degree audit is an automatically generated report in MyPorter that checks your completed and in-progress coursework against every requirement of your declared program: general education, the major, any minor, total credits, upper-division credits, residency (credits that must be earned at Porter), and GPA minimums. It is built against your catalog year — the requirements in effect when you started — not whatever the current catalog says. It is the single best tool for answering "what do I still need," and you should read yours every term before you register.
Reading it
Requirements you have satisfied collapse to a checkmark; unmet ones expand to list the specific courses that would fill them. Courses you are currently registered for show as "in progress" and move to satisfied once grades post. A red or unfilled block is something still outstanding. If a course you completed is not applying where you expected, that is usually a pending transfer evaluation, a substitution that was never formally recorded, or a course that counts toward a different requirement than you assumed — flag it with your adviser.
The "what-if" audit
You can run the audit against a different program to see how your existing credits would count toward another major or minor before you commit — useful when you are considering a change, adding a minor, or deciding between two paths. It shows what would transfer in, what you would still need, and roughly how many added terms it implies.
What it cannot do
The audit does not replace advising and does not itself guarantee your degree. Approved substitutions, waivers, transfer re-evaluations, and program exceptions have to be formally entered by the department and Registrar to show as satisfied — a verbal "that's fine" from a professor is not enough. Review the audit with your adviser at least two semesters out, submit any needed exceptions early, and do a final check before your last registration. The formal graduation application (filed the term before you finish) triggers the Registrar's own line-by-line review.
