For international students

International students

You are applying from outside the United States, or you are already here on a student visa.

Home / Discover your path / International students

1. Apply and document

Submit the application with certified English translations of your records, proof of English proficiency, and financial documentation for the first year. Apply early — immigration processing takes time and deadlines are firmer.

2. Get your visa document

After admission and verification of your finances, International Programs issues the eligibility document you need to apply for a student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

3. Keep your status valid

Maintain full-time enrollment every required term, get adviser approval before dropping below full-time, taking a leave, traveling, or working, and keep your documents and address current. The advisers are the authority — not classmates or the internet.

4. Settle in

A mandatory arrival orientation covers check-in, health requirements, banking, and academic expectations. Peer mentors and the international student organization help with the practical firsts, including a real Wesconsin winter.

Common questions

Can I work?
On-campus work is generally allowed within an hour cap. Off-campus work (curricular or optional practical training) requires advance authorization tied to your program. Never work without confirming it is authorized.

Is financial aid available?
Most U.S. federal and state aid is not, but Porter and outside scholarships, on-campus jobs, and graduate assistantships are.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. The offices, steps, dates, and contacts described here are invented; nothing on this page is a real process you can complete.
