Program types

Semester Exchange (12 partners, 9 countries): direct-enroll at a partner university, pay UW–Porter Falls tuition + host housing/meals, 12–15 credits pre-approved. Deadlines: Oct 1 for spring, Mar 1 for fall. Faculty-Led Summer (3–6 weeks, 3–6 credits): UW–Porter Falls professor teaches on-site, cohort of 12–20 students, includes excursions and guest lectures. Deadlines: Feb 1. Affiliate Programs (25+ providers, 40+ countries): broader destination list, provider handles logistics, credits transfer via pre-approval. Virtual Global Classrooms (COIL): collaborative projects with partner-class students abroad, embedded in a regular campus course, no travel required. Research/Internship Abroad: 8–12 weeks, arranged through Career Services or faculty mentor, credit via independent study.

Featured destinations

Lund University, Sweden (exchange since 1998): engineering, sustainability, data science; English-taught courses; student nations (social clubs) are a cultural immersion bonus. Faculty-led summer programs

2025–26 offerings: Sustainable Water Management in the Netherlands (Civil/Environmental, 4 credits, 3 weeks, site visits to Delta Works, Rotterdam climate adaptation); Design Thinking in Copenhagen (Art/Design/Business, 3 credits, 2 weeks, partnership with Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design); Tropical Agroecology in Costa Rica (Ag & Food Systems, 4 credits, 4 weeks, farm stays, coffee cooperative case study); Global Health Clinical Observation in Ghana (Nursing/Pre-Health, 3 credits, 3 weeks, hospital rotations, community health worker shadowing); Robotics & AI in Munich (Mech/EE/CS, 4 credits, 3 weeks, visits to BMW, KUKA, TU Munich labs). Cost range: $4,200–$6,800 (tuition + housing + excursions + insurance); airfare separate. Included: pre-departure orientation (2 Saturdays), 24/7 on-call faculty leader, re-entry workshop (first week of fall semester).

Funding and scholarships

Global Gateway Scholarship (need-based, up to $5,000): automatic consideration for Pell-eligible students applying to any credit-bearing program; 85% of applicants receive something. Faculty-Led Program Grants ($1,000–$2,500): merit + need, separate application (essay + faculty reference), deadline matches program deadline. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (federal, up to $5,000): Pell recipients only; Career Services runs a Gilman Workshop each cycle (90% of Porter Falls applicants who attend submit competitive essays). Freeman-ASIA (Asia-focused, up to $7,000): for students with demonstrated financial need. Departmental funds: Engineering, Nursing, Business, and Environmental Science have dedicated study-abroad endowments ($500–$3,000). Financial aid portability: federal/state/institutional aid applies to semester exchange (tuition paid to UW–Porter Falls); for affiliate programs, aid portability varies — see the Financial Aid study-abroad counselor.

Credit transfer and planning

Start early: first-years should attend the Study Abroad Fair (September, Rec Center gym, 40+ program tables) and meet the Global Education Advisor (Student Services Center 210, drop-ins Tuesdays 1–3 p.m.). Course approval: submit the Credit Pre-Approval Form with syllabi before departure; the Registrar evaluates equivalencies (most general-education and major-elective credits transfer smoothly; core major courses require department chair sign-off). Grade policy: exchange grades appear on transcript and calculate in GPA; affiliate/partner grades transfer as credit only (P/F). Residency requirement: 30 of last 45 credits must be UW–Porter Falls — plan accordingly if targeting a senior-year exchange. Passport: apply by November of the year before travel (routine processing 10–13 weeks); the Post Office on Main St. does passport photos ($15) and acceptance-agent service.

Virtual global classrooms

COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) modules are embedded in 30+ campus courses each semester. Examples: Business Communication (joint marketing plan with students at Hanyang University, synchronous Zoom sessions + async Slack); Environmental Policy (comparative watershed analysis with Universidad de Costa Rica, shared GIS data); Nursing Ethics (case-study debates with University of the Western Cape, WhatsApp discussion groups). No extra cost, no travel, appears on transcript as “Global Learning Designation.” The Virtual Exchange Certificate (3 COIL courses + reflection portfolio) is a 9-credential stackable with any major. Faculty interested in developing a COIL module apply through the Global Learning Fellowship (annual cohort, $3,000 stipend, instructional design support).

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. The programs, partners, scholarships, costs, and statistics described here are invented for this fictional university. No real study abroad programs or institutions are depicted.
