An assistantship pays a modest stipend and waives some or all of your tuition in exchange for defined work — teaching a lab section, running study data, staffing an office. What to check
Ask the program: how many assistantships exist, whether they renew for a second year, the hours, and whether the tuition piece is full or partial. A full waiver plus stipend can make the degree close to free; a partial one still leaves a bill. International students should confirm work-hour limits with the international office.
