How chapters work
Each society is a local chapter of a national academic honor organisation, usually tied to a discipline (engineering, business, nursing) or, for the general chapter, simply a student's overall academic standing; eligibility and induction requirements are set nationally, not by Porter.
What membership actually does
Beyond the cord worn at commencement, most chapters run tutoring, a scholarship or small grant program, and a standing line on a resume that a familiar name in a given field will recognise.
In and around Porter Falls
Curriculum decisions at Porter run through the departments that meet in Founders Hall and the Applied Arts Building, then to Faculty Senate, then to the Provost in Millwright Hall. The pace is deliberately slow and the review calendar is published.
The practical details
Active chapters: A dozen discipline-specific societies plus a general-scholarship chapter. Typical requirement: Top 10–35% of class, by society. Cost: One-time induction fee, set by each national society. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.
