A student, a faculty sponsor and the internship site sign a learning agreement before the term starts, defining specific learning objectives; the credit is awarded for meeting those objectives, not simply for showing up.
Why bother if it's not required
Some programs require it, but even where it's optional, credit-bearing status means the internship shows on an official transcript and can satisfy an elective requirement instead of just being unlisted work experience.

Career Services works with every major, but the pattern is the same across them: a required internship, co-op or clinical placement before graduation, listed on each program page. Ninety-six percent of Porter undergraduates complete one, most of them with an employer in the Valley or the Cities.
