Custodian (Third Shift)

Full-time, union-represented third-shift custodial positions cleaning academic buildings overnight; two openings.

Home / About / Work at Porter / Custodian

About the position

Custodial Services cleans more than a million square feet across Porter’s 14 buildings, and the third-shift crew of 18 handles the academic core overnight, when labs, studios, and classrooms are empty. Each custodian is assigned a zone — this opening covers parts of Founders Hall and the Applied Arts Building — and works with a lead custodian who sets the night’s priorities around event setups and weather.

This position is in a bargaining unit represented by a statewide public-employee union local. How representation works for university staff, and what the union does and does not bargain over in Wesconsin, is explained on classified staff union representation. Membership is voluntary.

Duties and responsibilities

A typical night includes:

  • Cleaning classrooms, labs, restrooms, offices, and common areas to a posted standard, including trash and recycling.
  • Floor care: dust mopping, wet mopping, auto-scrubbing, and periodic stripping and refinishing on a summer schedule.
  • Restocking supplies and reporting maintenance issues (a dripping fixture, a dead light, a stuck door) through the work-order system.
  • Following chemical safety, bloodborne-pathogen, and lab-entry procedures; some labs have rules about what custodians may touch.
  • Locking and securing buildings on the zone checklist and reporting anything unusual to Campus Safety.
  • Assisting with snow removal at building entrances when called in.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and safety labels.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds, push loaded carts, and stand and walk for most of an eight-hour shift.
  • Ability to work the third-shift schedule reliably.

Preferred

  • Six months of custodial, housekeeping, or building-maintenance experience.
  • Experience operating floor scrubbers or burnishers.

How to apply

Apply through the employment portal linked from Work at Porter, citing position number PF-26-0478. Upload: a résumé or the portal’s work-history form (either is fine) and two references; no cover letter is needed. Paper applications are available at the Human Resources counter in Millwright Hall 230, and staff will help you complete one. Review of applications begins October 21, 2026 and continues until the position is filled; applications complete by that date are guaranteed full consideration.

Interviews are held in the late afternoon so that current night-shift applicants can attend without losing sleep.

Questions about the position go to the hiring supervisor, Rosalie Thao, Night Custodial Supervisor, at thaor@uwporterfalls.edu or (715) 555–0239. Questions about the portal or an accommodation in the application process go to Human Resources at (715) 555–0216.

Equal opportunity and background check

UW–Porter Falls is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, arrest or conviction record (subject to the job-related exceptions in state law), military or veteran status, or any other protected status. See the university’s nondiscrimination statement.

The finalist must complete a criminal background check and a misconduct reference check with prior employers before an offer is final. A conviction record is reviewed for its relationship to the duties of this position and is not an automatic bar. This is a university staff position: an eligible veteran who meets the minimum qualifications is guaranteed a first-round interview. Under state open-records law, the names of up to five finalists may be released on request.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. This job posting is invented: there is no custodial opening, shift differential, union local, salary, or search committee, Rosalie Thao does not exist, and applications sent anywhere go nowhere.
