Why work here
UW–Porter Falls employs about 1,240 people in a typical fall — roughly 390 faculty, 410 academic staff, 330 university staff, and a rotating cast of limited-term employees — plus about 1,600 student workers. It is the second-largest employer in Porter County, after the health system in Lake City.
- The work is visible. A 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class of 24 mean faculty know students by name, and staff see the effect of what they do within a semester.
- The benefits are state benefits. Health plans with modest premiums, a defined-benefit pension through the Wesconsin Retirement System, and six weeks of paid parental leave for a birth parent. The benefits summary has the numbers.
- The town is livable. Porter Falls is a river town of about 17,000 where a three-bedroom house in Cedar Bluff costs a fraction of what it would in the Cities, 75 minutes west, and the Porter Loop shuttle runs every 12 minutes.
- The pace is human. The campus closes between the winter holidays and New Year’s Day, and most offices keep a 7:45–4:30 schedule.
Employee categories
Every posting names one of these categories. The category decides the hiring process, the benefits waiting period, how leave accrues, and who represents you in shared governance.
| Category | Who | How hiring works |
|---|---|---|
| Faculty | Tenure-track and tenured professors; clinical faculty | National searches on an academic calendar; fall postings for the following August; campus visit with a teaching demonstration |
| Academic staff | Lecturers and instructional staff; advisors, counselors, coaches, admissions and other professional roles | Year-round; committee search; one to two interview rounds |
| University staff | Trades, custodial, IT, clerical, and technical roles (formerly the classified civil service) | Year-round; often three to six weeks from close to offer; some positions union-represented |
| Limited-term (LTE) | Temporary work up to 1,039 hours in a 12-month period | Hired directly by the department; no benefits beyond those required by law |
| Student | Enrolled Porter students | Separate system; see student employment |
The practical differences between tenure-track and renewable-contract faculty are covered on non-tenure-track faculty.

How to apply
- Create one profile in the employment portal. It stores your résumé and work history for every future application.
- Attach exactly what the posting asks for. A missing required document is the most common reason an application is set aside before anyone reads it. Our general guide to reading a posting explains required versus preferred qualifications.
- Apply by the review date. Most searches stay open after it, but committees read the first pool first.
- Expect to hear back. Search committees notify applicants who are no longer under consideration, usually within a month of the review date. You can also check status in the portal.
If you need an accommodation to apply or interview, call Human Resources at (715) 555–0216. Paper applications are available at the HR counter for university staff positions.
Equal opportunity, background checks, and veterans’ preference
UW–Porter Falls is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, arrest or conviction record (subject to the job-related exceptions in state law), military or veteran status, or any other protected status.
Background checks. All finalists complete a criminal background check and a misconduct reference check with prior employers before an offer is final. Some positions add a motor vehicle record check, degree or license verification, or a caregiver check for clinical placements; the posting says so in advance. A conviction record is reviewed for its relationship to the job and is not an automatic bar.
Veterans’ preference. For university staff positions, an eligible veteran who meets the minimum qualifications is guaranteed a first-round interview, and a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more may be considered for a noncompetitive appointment. Upload a DD-214 with your application. Veterans considering further education can start at military and veterans services.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every opening, salary, office, and person on this page is invented; there is no employment portal, no search committee is reading anything, and applications go nowhere.
